Is the Number Fair — and Will It Actually Get Paid?

Child support sounds simple. It rarely feels that way.

If you're receiving it, you're worried the amount won't cover what your kids actually need — and whether the payments will even show up on time.

If you're paying it, you want to support your children, but you also need the number to be fair and based on what you really earn — not an inflated guess.

And both of you are hearing very different things about how it's calculated, what counts as income, and who pays for braces, daycare, and hockey.

You don't need to guess. You need a clear, accurate number you can trust — and a plan to make sure it's honoured.

Why Getting Child Support Right Matters

Child support isn't a small detail — it shapes your children's day-to-day life for years. Getting it wrong is costly in both directions.

Income is everything. Support is based on income, so if income is understated or misunderstood, the amount will be wrong — sometimes by a lot.

The “extras” add up. Daycare, health costs, and activities are often shared on top of the base amount. Missing them can leave one parent carrying costs they shouldn't.

Back-support can be claimed. If support wasn't set correctly, a parent may be able to seek retroactive support. Delaying a fair arrangement can create a large bill later.

It has to be enforceable. An agreement only helps if payments actually happen. We make sure yours can be enforced.

A fair, accurate arrangement now protects your children — and saves both parents from conflict down the road.

How Child Support Works in Ontario

Child support in Ontario follows the Child Support Guidelines. The good news: there's a clear framework. The catch: the details decide the number. Here's the plain-English version:

The base (“table”) amount. There's a set monthly amount based on three things: the paying parent's income, the number of children, and the province. This is the starting point.

Income has to be determined properly. That sounds easy, but it's often where disputes begin — especially with self-employment, bonuses, or a parent who isn't working to their potential. We make sure income is set correctly.

Special or extraordinary expenses (“section 7”). On top of the table amount, certain extra costs — like childcare, health and dental costs, and some activities or education — are usually shared between parents in proportion to their incomes.

Shared and split parenting can change the math. When children spend a significant amount of time with each parent, the amount may be adjusted. We'll show you how it applies to your schedule.

Two things parents often don't realize: child support is the right of the child — so it generally can't simply be bargained away — and it can continue past age 18 if a child is still in school or can't support themselves due to illness or disability.

Our promise: We get you an accurate, fair number you can rely on — and put it in a form that actually holds up and gets paid.
